The 2019 UEFA Champions League Final played host to not only two of the greatest football teams in European football, but also to one of its biggest sponsors – Expedia Group. To celebrate this partnership they wanted to treat their guests to an event that could show what they are about, together with a sporting night to remember.
Playing on their 'Destination:Football' mantra, my job was to bring previous Champions League Final locations to life with impressive five metre high theatrical illustrations – allowing the guests to travel to other european cities in the comfort of one event.
Entrance to the Champions Village just outside the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, Madrid.
Expedia's Destination Football proposition created the core idea to the event.
Centred around a 'Madrid rooftop terrace', attendees could travel to four other Champions League Final destinations without leaving the comfort of the venue: Paris 2006, Rome 2009, Munich 2012 and London 2013.
Arsenal v Barcelona
To create the feeling of 'being there', all illustrations had to have a high level of detail and sense of depth.
Bespoke fittings and illustrated counter facades added to the theatre of the event.
Real-life props were integrated with the illustrations throughout the whole event.
Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich
The illustration joining London to Munich was an impressive 20 metres wide.
Bayern Munich v Chelsea
The environments were brought to life by integrating life-size structures with the background and bar facade illustrations.
Manchester United v Barcelona
Every thought was given to how physical elements could be integrated with the illustrations, including building elements of The Spanish Steps in Rome.
